The Power Intro: Stop Introducing Yourself Like Everyone Else

Your introduction is the most underutilized 30 seconds in your career.

Think about the last time someone asked you to introduce yourself—at a conference, in an interview, or even at the start of a Zoom call.

What did you say?

If you’re like most professionals, you defaulted to the classic: “Hi, I’m [Name], I’m a [Title] at [Company].”

Factual. Forgettable. A wasted opportunity.

As keynote speaker Rich Mulholland puts it: “What would I say that would make me interesting to somebody else I met? If you can’t think of a reasonable answer for that, that’s something that you should remedy.”

Today I’m going to show you how to remedy it—with a Power Intro that positions you as the solution to a problem worth solving.


Why Your Current Intro Isn’t Working

Here’s the problem: your title and company don’t tell anyone what you actually do or why they should care.

When you say “I’m a Senior Data Scientist at [Big Company],” you’re forcing the other person to do mental gymnastics to figure out if you’re relevant to them. Most won’t bother.

Your introduction should be a launching point, not a dead end. It should make someone think, “I want to know more” or “This person could help me.”

A generic intro does neither.
